Saturday, February 23, 11 a.m.
Save and Start; a participatory workshop about seed saving and seed starting
with permaculture educator Lisa DePiano
Pine Point Branch, Springfield Library
204 Boston Road, Springfield, MA

Sanjay Acharya/WikiMedia
Permaculture educator Lisa DePiano will teach participants proper seed-saving practices and provide hands-on opportunities for participants to extract seeds from produce, prepare the seeds for saving and demonstrate correct seed storage for future use. Seed saving allows the home gardener  to avoid reliance on mass-marketed hybrid seeds, allowing a greater variety of local plants to flourish.  Once common practice, seed saving is being relearned by gardeners and farmers, who are becoming more aware of the detrimental effects of hybrid seeds.  Lisa will also guide participants in starting seeds for their spring gardens.  This workshop is part of the Springfield Seed Library, a collaborative project of the Springfield Library, Baystate Medical Outreach Library, Artists in Context and artist/UMass Professor Joseph Krupczynski.  No RSVP is required.
